Yesterday, on May 5th, 2026, I had the privilege of teaching a short self-defense course for the Halton Police Department Mentorship Program at Elsie MacGill Secondary School.
It was truly an honor to work with such an engaged and respectful group of young people who are pursuing future careers in law enforcement and community leadership.
Throughout the morning, we explored not only practical self-defense skills, but also the importance of mindset, decision-making, and responsible use of force.
The session included a dynamic warm-up, discussions surrounding situational awareness and use of force, hands-on self-defense training, and an open question period where students had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about martial arts, personal safety, and policing.
A special thank you goes out to Officers Don and Jovi of the Halton Regional Police Service for their leadership and continued investment in mentoring youth within our community. Their passion for guiding the next generation was evident throughout the entire event.
I would also like to sincerely thank Ms. Bronagh O’Rourke and the staff of Elsie MacGill Secondary School for hosting us and creating such a welcoming environment.
Despite the busy energy of a school gymnasium, the students remained focused, enthusiastic, and eager to learn.
Hearing that the students “wanted to do more” was incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful program.
At the Milton Academy of Martial Arts, we strongly believe that martial arts training is about far more than physical techniques. It is about building confidence, discipline, awareness, leadership, and the ability to remain calm and responsible under pressure — qualities that are invaluable both in law enforcement and in everyday life.
Thank you again to everyone involved for the opportunity. I look forward to working together again in the future.
