Working Together to Build Stronger Future Leaders

Yesterday, on May 5th, 2026, I had the privilege of teaching a short self-defense course for the Halton Police Department Mentorship Program at Elsie MacGill Secondary School.

It was truly an honor to work with such an engaged and respectful group of young people who are pursuing future careers in law enforcement and community leadership.

Throughout the morning, we explored not only practical self-defense skills, but also the importance of mindset, decision-making, and responsible use of force.

The session included a dynamic warm-up, discussions surrounding situational awareness and use of force, hands-on self-defense training, and an open question period where students had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about martial arts, personal safety, and policing.

A special thank you goes out to Officers Don and Jovi of the Halton Regional Police Service for their leadership and continued investment in mentoring youth within our community. Their passion for guiding the next generation was evident throughout the entire event.

I would also like to sincerely thank Ms. Bronagh O’Rourke and the staff of Elsie MacGill Secondary School for hosting us and creating such a welcoming environment.

Despite the busy energy of a school gymnasium, the students remained focused, enthusiastic, and eager to learn.

Hearing that the students “wanted to do more” was incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful program.

At the Milton Academy of Martial Arts, we strongly believe that martial arts training is about far more than physical techniques. It is about building confidence, discipline, awareness, leadership, and the ability to remain calm and responsible under pressure — qualities that are invaluable both in law enforcement and in everyday life.

Thank you again to everyone involved for the opportunity. I look forward to working together again in the future.

Win or Learn: The True Meaning of Belt Testing

Yesterday, we held another belt ranking at the Academy, and I want to start by saying how proud I am of every single student who stepped onto the floor.

It takes courage to test.

To stand in front of your peers, your instructors, and sometimes even your family—and give your best effort under pressure—is no small thing. And each of you did exactly that. You showed up, you gave it your all, and you represented the values of our dojo with pride.

That alone is something worth celebrating.

More Than a Test

At first glance, a belt exam might seem like a pass-or-fail situation.

Did I earn my next belt… or didn’t I?

But that’s not how we see it.

At the Academy, a belt test is not just about what you know—it’s about how you approach your training.

Because the truth is:

In martial arts—and in life—we either win, or we learn. We never lose.

The Learner Mindset

At the end of the exam, we talked about something important: having a learner mindset.

A learner mindset means you walk into every class, every challenge, every test with one simple belief:

“There is something here for me to learn.”

When you think this way, something powerful happens.

  • If you perform well—you win.
  • If you struggle—you learn.
  • If you make mistakes—you grow.

Either way, you move forward.

The only time we truly lose… is when we convince ourselves that we already know everything.

Because when that happens, we stop listening.

We stop improving.

We stop growing.

Black Belt Thinking Starts Now

Many people believe that the goal is to reach black belt.

But the truth is…

Black belt is where the real journey begins.

Up to that point, we are building the fundamentals. Learning the “what” and the “how.”

But at black belt, we begin to explore the unknown. We adapt. We refine. We deepen our understanding.

And none of that is possible without a learner mindset.

So the real question isn’t:

“Did I pass my test?”

It’s:

“What did I learn—and how will I use it to improve?”

Moving Forward

To everyone who tested yesterday—congratulations. You took a step forward on your journey.

Whether you earned your next rank or discovered areas to improve, you are exactly where you need to be.

Keep showing up.

Keep learning.

Keep growing.

Because in this dojo…

We don’t lose.

We win, or we learn.

What Happens When Things Don’t Go to Plan?

Most people believe martial arts is about learning the perfect technique.

The perfect punch.

The perfect block.

The perfect kata.

And in the beginning… that’s true.

The First Phase: Building the Foundation

From White Belt through Brown Belt, students are learning the fundamentals.

They develop:

  • Strong stances
  • Clean technique
  • Coordination and control
  • Discipline through repetition

This stage is about getting it right.

We train in a structured environment where:

  • The attack is known
  • The response is practiced
  • The outcome is predictable

Because before a student can handle the unexpected…

they must first build something reliable.

Shodan: Master of the Basics

Earning a Black Belt is often seen as the finish line.

But in traditional martial arts, Shodan doesn’t mean “master.”

It means “beginning level.”

At Shodan, a student has proven:

  • They understand the system
  • They can perform the techniques
  • They have the discipline to train consistently

They are now a master of the basics.

And that’s exactly what qualifies them to move forward.

Where Real Training Begins

This is where many people misunderstand the journey.

Black Belt is not the end.

It’s the point where training becomes real.

Up to this point, students have been learning what to do.

After Black Belt, they begin learning:

  • What to do when things don’t go to plan
  • How to adapt when timing breaks down
  • How to respond when techniques fail

Because in reality:

  • No opponent moves exactly as expected
  • No situation unfolds perfectly
  • No technique works 100% of the time

At Black Belt, training shifts from memorization to understanding.

From techniques to principles.

Why Some People Plateau

Many students reach Black Belt and stop.

Not because they’ve mastered martial arts…

But because they’ve reached the first major milestone.

It’s an achievement—and it should be celebrated.

But stopping there is like:

  • Finishing the alphabet and never learning to write
  • Learning scales on an instrument but never playing music

You’ve built the tools…

but haven’t fully learned how to use them.

The Next Level: Thinking, Adapting, Evolving

Beyond Black Belt, students begin to:

  • Experiment
  • Problem-solve
  • Pressure-test their skills
  • Discover their own expression of the art

They learn how to stay calm when things fall apart.

They learn how to adjust instead of freeze.

They learn how to make the art their own.

This is where confidence becomes real—because it’s no longer based on perfect conditions.

For Parents: What This Means for Your Child

If your child continues past Black Belt, something special happens.

They don’t just become more skilled…

They become more capable.

  • They learn to handle uncertainty
  • They build resilience under pressure
  • They develop leadership and maturity

These are life skills that go far beyond the dojo.

The Way Is in the Training

There’s a saying we often remind our students of:

“The Way is in the Training.”

Not in the belt.

Not in the title.

Not in the destination.

The real value comes from continuing the journey.

Final Thought

Earning a Black Belt is something to be proud of.

But it’s not the end of the story.

It’s the moment a student is finally ready

to begin training at a deeper level.

At our school, we don’t just celebrate Black Belts…

We build what comes next.

The Hidden Cost of Too Much Screen Time: Why Social & Physical Hygiene Matter and How SKILLZ Helps

Today’s kids spend more time on screens than ever before. Between phones, tablets, video games, and streaming, it’s easy for hours to pass by without much movement or real connection. While technology has its place, too much screen time can quietly affect a child’s health, focus, and confidence.

The Social Cost

Spending too much time online can make it harder for kids to build real friendships. Online chats and games don’t replace the face-to-face skills children learn when they play, train, or work together in person. These skills—like sharing, teamwork, and reading emotions—are built through real experiences, not just digital ones.

The Physical Cost

Screens keep kids sitting still. Over time, this can lead to weak muscles, poor posture, and less energy. Being active is not only good for the body, it also helps the brain focus and grow. Children who move more often tend to sleep better and handle stress more easily.

The Mental Cost

Too much screen time can also affect a child’s mood. Scrolling through social media or playing endless games can lead to stress, worry, or even low self-esteem. Balance is key. Kids need both rest and activity, online and offline time, to feel strong and confident.

Building Better Habits Through Martial Arts

At Milton Academy of Martial Arts, we give students a safe space to grow strong in body and mind. Training helps them:

  • Build focus by learning new skills step by step
  • Gain confidence as they set and achieve goals
  • Strengthen their bodies through active movement
  • Make lasting friendships with their classmates

Through karate and other programs, children discover that real strength comes from practice, discipline, and connection—not from a screen.

A Balanced Path Forward

Technology will always be part of our world. But when kids also spend time moving, training, and connecting with others, they build the balance they need to succeed in life. Our dojo is here to guide them on that path.

Get your home ready to defend against winter.

Hey there AMA tribe,

I received the email below from one our HVAC guys and thought I’d share. The one thing I would add to the list is clear any debris off the rain water grates on the road in front of your house. This will help prevent flooding in the spring when the snow melts!

Fall Home Prep Checklist

As the kids head back to school and many of you return to the office, your home will be spending more time on its own.

When the house is empty during the day, you want to know it’s protected. Ensuring your HVAC and plumbing are ready for the fall  means fewer surprises and more peace of mind for your family.

Essential September Tasks:

⏰ Program thermostat for school/work schedules
💧 Check for running toilets that waste water
📲 Install water sensors in basement areas
🍂 Clear outdoor vents of leaves & debris
🔥 Test your heating system before you need it
💨 Replace furnace air filters for a fresh start to the school year

How Martial Arts—and the Right Sensei—Help Students Become Their Best Selves

In every dojo, the mats hold more than punches, kicks, and kata. They hold the stories of transformation. Students walk in carrying doubt, distraction, or maybe just curiosity. Over time, with guidance and discipline, they walk out standing taller, thinking clearer, and believing in themselves in ways they never imagined.

At the heart of this transformation is not just the martial art itself—but the relationship between the student and their Sensei.

The Role of Martial Arts in Shaping Character

Martial arts training is not simply about learning how to defend yourself. Yes, you gain powerful self-defense skills, but just as important are the lessons in focus, respect, and perseverance.

  • Discipline: Regular practice teaches students that growth comes from consistent effort, not shortcuts.
  • Confidence: Each belt earned isn’t just a rank—it’s proof that they can set a goal and achieve it.
  • Resilience: Mistakes and setbacks aren’t failures; they’re part of the process that makes the student stronger.

The dojo becomes a living classroom where these values are tested, strengthened, and eventually carried into every part of life—school, work, family, and community.

The Power of a Good Sensei
A skilled Sensei doesn’t just teach techniques; they see potential. Where a student sees weakness, the Sensei sees opportunity. Where a student feels fear, the Sensei sees courage waiting to be called out.

A good Sensei:

  • Pushes when you think you’ve given your all, reminding you that you are capable of more.
  • Holds you accountable to the values of honor, integrity, and respect.
  • Celebrates your victories but, more importantly, guides you through your struggles.

Goethe once said: “If you look at a person as they are, they will always remain that way. But if you look at a person as they could be, they will grow into what they should be.”

That is exactly the role of a Sensei: to see students not just as they are today, but as the strong, confident people they are becoming.

Growing Into the Best Version of Yourself
The true reward of martial arts isn’t just a black belt. It’s the person you become along the way.

  • A child learns to focus in school because they practiced focus in the dojo.
  • A teen finds resilience in life’s challenges because they learned to keep going after being knocked down.
  • An adult discovers a supportive community and a renewed sense of purpose.

Every kick, block, and kata is a step forward—not just in martial arts, but in life.

Final Thoughts
A martial arts journey is about more than skill—it’s about self-discovery. With the right Sensei to guide the way, students don’t just train their bodies; they sharpen their minds and strengthen their spirit.

In the end, the greatest victory isn’t over an opponent—it’s over the doubt, fear, and limits that once held you back. That’s how martial arts, paired with a dedicated Sensei, develops students into their best selves.

Why the Drive To Practice Matters Just as Much as the Ride Home

Before a child ever steps onto the mat, field, or court, they’ve already begun forming a prediction in their brain about how the day will go.

That prediction isn’t just based on their skill level—it’s based on your tone, your energy, and your expectations.

Common Phrases That Sabotage Before Practice

  • “Don’t embarrass me today.”
  • “You better listen or we’re not coming back.”
  • “Try harder this time, or I’m pulling you out.”
  • “You’ve been slacking lately. Fix it.”

While often said in frustration or fear of wasted effort, these statements actually prime a child’s brain for stress, not success.

The Neuroscience of the “Drive to Perform”

1. Predictive Processing

Children’s brains are constantly forecasting how events will unfold based on previous interactions.

  • If past drives included yelling or guilt, their brain associates the activity with fear—before they even arrive.
  • This activates a threat response, even if nothing negative has actually happened yet.

2. Cognitive Load Increases

Pressure to “do well” adds mental clutter, which reduces working memory.
➡️ This makes it harder for them to retain cues or corrections from their coach.

3. Loss of Autonomy

External pressure robs a child of their sense of ownership—a core component of motivation.

  • This triggers a drop in dopamine, making it harder for them to feel good about showing up.

4. Fight / Flight Activation

Even if they don’t say it, children may:

  • Freeze or mentally check out during class
  • Act “goofy” or “lazy” as a defense mechanism
  • Refuse to participate—not because they dislike the activity, but because they associate it with emotional distress

What Parents Can Say Instead

Use the car ride as a confidence primer, not a pressure cooker.

Connection Statements

  • “No matter what happens today, I’m proud of you for showing up.”
  • “You’ve worked hard. Just keep learning and having fun.”
  • “What are you most excited to try today?”

Encourage Ownership

  • “Is there anything you want to focus on today?”
  • “How can I support you before you go in?”

Reset with Ritual

  • Play their favorite music
  • Sit in comfortable silence
  • Offer a grounding phrase: “You’ve got this. I believe in you.”

BONUS: The Brain Chemistry of Positive Connection

When you create a safe, supportive environment before practice, the brain responds with:

  • Dopamine – motivation
  • Oxytocin – bonding
  • Serotonin – emotional regulation
  • Endorphins – energy and resilience

This chemical cocktail helps kids:
✅ Stay calm under pressure
✅ Try new things without fear of failure
✅ Enjoy the experience—which keeps them coming back

Summary: The Car is a Classroom

  • The way to practice sets the tone.
  • The way home seals the experience.

As a parent, you have two powerful windows to shape your child’s mindset.

Choose encouragement over expectation.
Choose presence over pressure.
Choose connection over control.

Because what matters most isn’t whether your child wins, scores, or even gets the technique right…

What matters most is that your child feels safe, supported, and excited to return.

Top 3 Reasons Kids Give to Avoid the Class They Were Once Excited About

It happens all the time—your child was thrilled about starting karate, soccer, dance, or another exciting extracurricular. They couldn’t wait for the first day. But now, just a few days, weeks, or months in, they suddenly “don’t like it,” say it’s “boring,” or claim they’re “not good at it.”

What changed?

Understanding the top 3 most common reasons kids give for not wanting to attend a class or practice they once looked forward to—and how to gently guide them through it—can be a game-changer for parents.

Top 3 Avoidance Reasons Kids Give:

  • “I’m bored.” This often means the novelty has worn off. Kids thrive on excitement, and when the routine kicks in, it might not feel as thrilling. But boredom isn’t a reason to quit—it’s a normal part of learning something new and is a sign that mastery is starting.
  • “I’m not good at it.” Kids can be incredibly hard on themselves when they don’t master something right away. This excuse is often a mask for fear of failure or embarrassment. What kids don’t realize is that repetition, repetition and more repetition is needed to become good. Rarely do students walk into something new being highly skilled. This is the exception. Most everyone must put time and practice in.
  • “I just don’t want to go anymore.” This vague resistance is usually a catch-all for discomfort, anxiety, or simply not wanting to step out of their comfort zone.

 1. Set Clear and Loving Boundaries

Children feel safest when expectations are consistent. If your child senses you’re unsure or willing to negotiate every time they push back, it creates anxiety, not relief. Say something calm and firm like:

“We’re going to class. I know you can do it, and I’ll be right here to support you.”

2. Recognize That Avoidance Can Become a Habit

If a child learns that discomfort leads to opting out, they may begin resisting all unfamiliar or challenging situations. Show them early that pushing through is a normal part of growth.

3. Understand Their Brains Are Still Developing

Most children aren’t yet equipped to make long-term decisions based on what’s good for them. What feels uncomfortable now may be building confidence and capability for life. Don’t let short-term fear dictate long-term choices.

4. Use Gradual Exposure as a Bridge

If the resistance is strong, ease the pressure by letting our child watch or participate minimally for a short while, without making that the new norm.

Say:

“Let’s go together and just watch today. But next time, we’ll participate again.”

5. Reframe the Challenge

Remind your child that trying, not perfection, is what matters. Use phrases like:

“Being nervous means you care. Every time you go, you get braver and stronger.”

6. Keep the Long-Term Goal in Mind

These small moments of hesitation are opportunities to teach grit and emotional resilience. By guiding them through resistance now, you’re helping them build confidence they’ll carry for life.

Final Thoughts

As a parent, you’re not just managing logistics—you’re shaping how your child responds to challenge, discomfort, and new experiences. When you lovingly hold the line and reinforce follow-through, you’re teaching them a deeper truth: they are capable, even when it feels hard. With these 6 strategies, you can help your child move past the excuses and into the growth that comes from doing what once felt impossible!

Summer Brain Gains – How The Academy Fights the Summer Slide with Science and Fun

Every summer, parents worry about one thing:

Will my child fall behind while school is out?

The truth is, the summer slide is real — and it affects millions of children each year. This loss of academic and cognitive momentum during school breaks can delay progress and dampen a child’s love for learning.

But what if there was a way to keep your child’s brain active, their confidence growing, and their joy for learning fully alive?

At AMA Milton, we’ve have a SKILLZ system that does exactly that.

It’s called Summer Brain Gains — and it’s powered by brain science, movement, and motivation.

Let’s break down how we turn summer into a season of growth — not regression.

1. SKILLZ Activates Brain Chemistry That Fuels Learning

When children are engaged in a fun, structured environment, their brains release D.O.S.E. chemicals:

  • Dopamine (reward and motivation)
  • Oxytocin (connection and trust)
  • Serotonin (emotional stability)
  • Endorphins (happiness and energy)

The SKILLZ program is designed to activate this chemical “brain boost” through game-based learning, connection-driven instruction, and constant encouragement. That means your child leaves every class happier, more motivated, and more receptive to continued growth.

2. SKILLZ Strengthens Executive Function and Working Memory

Summer can disrupt a child’s cognitive rhythms. Without structure and active engagement, their executive function — the brain’s control center for focus, memory, and emotional regulation — can begin to dull.

Our classes incorporate intentional challenges that target memory, attention, and self-regulation. Through techniques like neurobics (brain warm-ups) and Brain SKILLZ-targeted drills, students practice:

  • Recalling sequences
  • Responding with control under pressure
  • Processing multi-step instructions

These activities “wake up” the brain and strengthen the exact skills needed for academic readiness.

3. SKILLZ Combats Stress and Reignites Motivation

SKILLZ flips the script from a traditional classroom setting by creating a space that feels safe, joyful, and empowering. Through high-energy drills, consistent praise, and peer interaction, children build confidence and reconnect with learning in a fun, low-pressure environment.

The result?

Kids stop dreading structure — and start craving it again.

4. SKILLZ Builds Learning Through Play — Not Pressure

According to educational neuroscience, children learn best when they feel safe, connected, and curious. That’s why every SKILLZ drill and game is designed with age-specific cognitive and emotional needs in mind.

Our program turns martial arts into a tool for whole-brain development by embedding cognitive goals into every physical movement. Whether it’s improving balance and coordination or building memory and focus, each class feels like play — but functions like learning.

5. SKILLZ Creates Lasting Positive Associations with Learning

Research shows that children remember the emotional tone of an experience more than the content. That’s why SKILLZ uses the Peak-End Rule to ensure every class ends on a high — with fun, connection, and praise.

This creates long-term motivation and reinforces a powerful belief in children:

Learning is fun.

Effort leads to progress.

And growth never stops — even in the summer.

Not Just a Class. A Summer of Growth.

Our programs are more than just martial arts. They’re child development systems built on science, movement, and emotional intelligence.

Whether your child joins us for day camps or in-studio classes, every experience is designed to:

  • Boost brain development
  • Rebuild confidence
  • Create joyful, memorable learning

This summer, give your child a break from the break. Let them reset, recharge, and rise.

Because in the world of SKILLZ, every class is a chance to grow — and every season is a season of success.

Let the gains begin!

Product Spotlight: Grounded Bedsheets – My Honest Review and Why I Recommend Them

As martial artists, we know the importance of balance—not just in our movements but also in our daily lives. Achieving a good night’s sleep is one of the most critical factors in maintaining our energy, focus, and overall health. Recently, my wife came across a product that has completely transformed our sleep quality: grounded bedsheets. After trying it out, I’m excited to share my thoughts and recommend it to our dojo community. https://amzn.to/4gQ1LLy

What Are Grounded Bedsheets?

Grounded bedsheets are a type of bedding made with a blend of organic cotton and silver fibers. These materials work together to provide conductivity, allowing you to connect with the Earth’s natural energy while you sleep. Think of it as an effortless way to “ground” yourself—similar to the calming effect of walking barefoot on grass.

This specific sheet, which we purchased in a king size, is made of 90% cotton and 10% silver fibers, giving it a soft, skin-friendly feel while maximizing its conductive properties.

How Does It Work?

Using the sheet is incredibly simple. It functions just like a regular fitted sheet but with a little extra tech. Here’s how it works:

1. Spread the sheet over your mattress like you would with any fitted sheet.

2. Snap the included grounding connection cord to the sheet’s metal stud.

3. Plug the other end of the cord into the grounding jack of a standard wall outlet.

4. Make sure your skin is in contact with the sheet while you sleep. This connection allows your body to discharge excess static electricity and absorb the Earth’s natural energy, which can support better sleep and overall well-being.

My Experience with Grounded Bedsheets

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when my wife first brought these home. The idea of “grounding” while sleeping sounded far-fetched, and I wasn’t sure how a bedsheet could make such a difference. But since she was so excited about it, I decided to give it a try.

After just one week of using it, I was genuinely amazed. My sleep felt deeper and more restful, and I started waking up feeling refreshed and energized—a big shift from the groggy mornings I had been experiencing.

What really surprised me was the consistency of the results. Every night, I felt the same benefits. I even noticed that I recovered faster after long days of teaching and training at the dojo. The sheet’s claims of improving sleep and promoting recovery weren’t just marketing—they were real for me. https://amzn.to/4gQ1LLy

Key Features of the Product

Here are a few standout features of this grounding sheet:

High-Quality Materials: Made from organic cotton and interlaced silver fibers, the sheet is soft, breathable, and skin-friendly.

Built-in Safety: The grounding cord includes a 100kohm resistance, ensuring safety and effective conductivity.

Easy to Use: It’s as simple as putting on a fitted sheet and plugging in the cord—no complicated setup required.

Why I Recommend This to Our Dojo Community

For martial artists, recovery is as important as training. Whether you’re preparing for a grading exam, recovering from an intense class, or simply looking to improve your overall well-being, grounded bedsheets can be a great addition to your routine. They’re a simple, natural way to support your body’s recovery and sleep quality.

Where to Get It https://amzn.to/4gQ1LLy

This product also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so it’s easy to try without risk. If you’ve been searching for a way to improve your sleep, reduce stress, or feel more balanced throughout the day, I highly recommend checking out grounded bedsheets.

Final Thoughts

In martial arts, we learn that small adjustments can lead to big improvements over time. Incorporating grounded bedsheets into your nightly routine could be one of those small adjustments that makes a big impact on your health and performance.
